Department at a Glance

The Department of English, Pandu College, has been committed to academic excellence in both Higher Secondary and Undergraduate education since its inception in 1962. The department received permission from Gauhati University to introduce the Honours programme in English Literature from the academic session 1967–68. Over the years, the department has emerged as a vibrant centre for literary studies, critical thinking and holistic learning. Currently, the department has seven dedicated and qualified faculty members: three with PhDs and three with M.Phil. degrees, all actively involved in teaching, mentoring, research, and other academic activities. The department aims to instil an intellectually stimulating environment that nurtures creativity, communication skills, and a strong appreciation of literature and culture. Beyond classroom teaching, it actively encourages students to engage in seminars, workshops, literary events, and co-curricular activities that support their academic and personal development.

Vision

The Department of English aims to create an inclusive, stimulating environment in which students can enhance their understanding of literature, language, and society. It aims to foster independent thinking, ethical insight, creativity, and cultural awareness. It enables students to confidently contribute meaningfully to academia, their future careers, and society at large.

Mission

The mission of the Department of English is to deliver an engaging educational experience that combines literary studies with practical communication skills. The department is dedicated to encouraging academic research, creative expression, and professional proficiency through both curricular and extracurricular programmes. It also prepares students for advanced studies, research, and a range of career trajectories by developing analytical skills, effective communication, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Facilities and Activities of the Department:

1. Departmental Library

The Departmental Library houses a valuable collection of nearly 600 books, including texts on English literature, literary criticism, language studies, and related subjects. The library serves as an important academic resource for both students and teachers.

2. Departmental Wall Magazine: Horizon

Horizon, the department’s annual wall magazine, offers students a creative space to express their literary and artistic talents through poems, essays, articles, reviews, sketches, and other original works. The magazine encourages creativity, critical engagement, and thoughtful self-expression. It reflects the diverse interests, ideas, and perspectives of the students within the department.

3. Students’ Database

The department has a detailed Students’ Database that includes key academic and contact details. This database supports efficient communication and organised record-keeping of the students.


4. YRC (Young Researchers’ Conference)

The department organises the Young Researchers’ Conference to encourage students to present their research papers and academic ideas. The conference helps students develop research aptitude, presentation skills, and academic confidence.

5. Film Screening

The department organises film screenings to introduce students to literary adaptations, cultural themes, and socially relevant issues. These sessions encourage discussion, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of literature and society.

6. Annual Lecture Series

The department organises annual lectures by invited scholars, writers, and academicians on important literary and cultural topics. These lectures provide students with opportunities to learn from experts beyond the classroom.

7. Research Methodology Workshop

Workshops on research methodology are conducted to familiarise students with academic research, citation styles, and scholarly writing. The programme helps students develop research skills essential for higher studies.

8. Guidance Talks on Diverse Topics, including Career Counselling and Exam Preparation

The department regularly organises guidance talks on career opportunities, higher education, competitive examinations, and personality development. These sessions help students make informed academic and professional choices.

9. Academic Field Visits

Academic field visits are arranged to provide students with practical exposure beyond classroom learning. Such visits help students gain knowledge through observation, interaction, and experience.

10. Parent-Teacher Meets

Parent-teacher meetings are conducted to discuss students’ academic progress, attendance, and overall development. These interactions help maintain healthy communication between teachers and parents.

11. Teacher-Guardian Initiative

Under this initiative, teachers guide and support students in their academic and personal development. The programme aims to create a supportive and student-friendly learning environment.

12. MoU Activities

The department conducts various academic and collaborative activities under Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with other institutions and organisations. These activities include lectures, workshops, student exchanges, and collaborative programmes for academic enrichment.

The listed activities are major programmes organised by the department. It also hosts a range of academic, literary, cultural, and student activities to promote student development and encourage participation.

Educational Field Trip to Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, Shillong, Meghalaya, 2025The Department of English, Pandu College, organised an educational field trip to the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC), Shillong, Meghalaya on 1st March, 2025. The trip was designed to provide students with experiential learning beyond the classroom and to familiarise them with the rich cultural diversity of North-East India. Film Screening and Discussion Programme 2025The Department of English, Pandu College, in collaboration with the Pandu College Campus Cine Club, organised a Film Screening and Discussion Programme on 13th February, 2025 at Room No. A-005. The critically acclaimed film Rudaali (1993), directed by Kalpana Lajmi and based on the 1979 short story by Bengali author Mahasweta Devi, was screened for the students.
