Department at a glance

The Department of Political Science was established in 1962 with the aim of unveiling excellence under the headship of Dr. K. N. Mukharjee and Prof Narayan Deka . Initially the department started with only two faculties imparting general classes. The department offers three years BA and subject for Higher Secondary. In the year 1981 Mrs Jayshree Baruah joined the department and honors classes were started from . Later Dr. Asha Sarma , Mr. Pranjal Patiri and Dr. N J Borah joined the department to enhancing it to a full flagged one . In 2010 with the funding from UGC and under Gauhati University the department started Human Rights Education (HRE) as an elective subject for undergraduates. At present the department has three Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor and one part time faculty working enthusiastically for the overall growth of the department. Post Graduate Classes are permitted to open in the Department by Gauhati University from the session 2020.

The department opens space for political awareness among upcoming citizen for a healthy political competitive society imparting best possible knowledge through teaching of well qualified faculty members. The department provides quality education in the stream to the entire Northeast region at par with premium institutions of the country.. The strength of the department is that it is one of the oldest founding departments maintaining the glory of producing a group of 1st class graduate throughout the years. Along with the regular study course the faculty members provide career counseling and leadership development for the students.

Facilities

For the betterment of the students, the department conducts some practices. As a part of this the department organises class seminar for major students. The department also publishes Departmental Annual Bulletin ‘Politic’ to develop creativity among the students. It has a Wall Magazine for the members to encourage their skill of creative writings. Along with that the department organizes an Annual Lecture program every year and arranges educational tour to universities, National Institutes for future academic activities for the students under experiential learning.

In the era of technical development the study materials are provided to the students through electronic ways like WhatsApp, Email & Google Classroom. Excursions for the students are arranged during semester break cum winter vacation, every year in the month of January. The department also possesses Narayan Deka Memorial Departmental Library with rich volumes of books which the students can avail for their reference.
