Department at a glance
The Department of Botany, Pandu College, came into being in the year 1965, as an independent department with the introduction of UG courses in the Science stream. The honours (Major) courses were started in the year 1976. The department flourished under the able guidance of the founder Head of The Department, Mr. S. N. Barman. After serving as the Principal of Bajali College for a couple of years, he retired as the Principal of Pandu College. Mr. Debendra Bara, the next HoD., was also an excellent teacher. In between, a number of teachers rendered their services. Prominent amongst them were Prof. R.N.Bhattachryya, Prof. Pabitra Patowary and Prof. Manju Devi, all of whom later joined Cotton College, Guwahati. The other faculty members who retired as HoDs, after rendering their valuable services for long periods of time to the department are Dr. Sadhan Choudhury, Dr. Mamata Das and Dr. Deepali Deka. Another faculty member, Dr. Ramen Talukdar was appointed as the Principal of B.B.K. College, Barpeta, Assam. Mr. Mantu Mahanta took charge as HoD from Dr. D. Deka on 31/01/2013. The other faculty members presently working in and for the department are Dr. Riju Kakati Sarma (presently serving as HoD from1/9/2021), Dr. Dulumoni Saharia, Dr. Snehashish Dutta, Dr. Pramod Medhi and Dr. Maina Borah. The department has grown from strength to strength in the last 57 years. Since 1976, 45 batches of degree (Honours) students have left their footprints in this department. Mention must be made of the laboratory bearers, Sri Sitaram Mukhiya, Sri Hari Baishya, Sri Durgeshwar Sarma, Sri Rado Rabha, Sri Paresh Rabha who took care of the needs of the practical classes, the students and faculty members of the department. Sri Tapan Medhi worked for a brief stint in the department on a part time basis. Presently, laboratory bearers Gautam Mukhiya and Rajib Thakuria look after the needs of the laboratories and the department as a whole. From a meager beginning, the department now boasts of well furnished rooms and laboratories. The department also has access to a Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) of the college. In the Golden Jubilee year of Pandu College (2012-13) and in the year (2017-18), the department of Botany was awarded the Best Department, amongst all the departments of the college on 5th September, the College Foundation Day.

The special features of the department are as follows:

Excellent result.

Experienced and dedicated faculty members.

Well equipped laboratories and class rooms.
