Overview:
The Department of Mathematics at Pandu College is a vibrant academic unit dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. It was established in the year 1963 with the Pre-University classes. Prof. ARUN CHATTERJEE was the first Head of the Department. After him Prof. JITEN DAS and S. BHATTACHERJYA worked in the Department for few months. Prof. BIJIT DEY joined the Department in the year 1964. Prof. DEY was the first faculty of the department who joined in a sanctioned post in the year 1966, when the B.Sc. (General) in Mathematics was also started. After one year Prof HARIDAS SARKAR joined the Department in 1967. It is due to the desire and joint effort of them that in 1968 the B.Sc. (Honours) course was started in the Department. Since then, it has consistently strived to impart high-quality education and foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts among students.

The department aims to be a leading center of mathematical education and research, nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students, and contributing to the advancement of mathematical sciences at both the national and international levels.

Academic Programs:
The Department of Mathematics offers undergraduate programs (Honours and Regular) under Gauhati University along with the Higher Secondary syllabus offered by AHSEC. The application for the postgraduate courses is pending approval from the concerned authority.
Faculty:
The department has a team of experienced and dedicated faculty members who are experts in various branches of mathematics, including pure mathematics and applied mathematics. The faculty is actively involved in research, with numerous publications in reputed national and international journals.
Research and Collaboration:
The department encourages research across a broad spectrum of mathematical disciplines. Dr. Rituparna Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, is supervising 5 Ph.D research scholars under his guidance.

The Department of Mathematics is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a well-stocked library with an extensive collection of mathematical literature, computer labs with the latest software for mathematical computation and modeling, and classrooms designed to facilitate interactive learning. In addition, the department also has an E-Library which contains various study materials prepared by the faculty members, e-books, previous years question papers, question banks etc for the benefit of the students.
Departmental Awards:
Since 2023, the department has introduced the following annual awards:
Narendra Nath Barman Memorial Award for the student/students getting highest marks in the Under Graduate Mathematics (Hons). The award is donated by Mr. Dipjyoti Barman, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Pandu College.
Dhirendra Chandra Kalita Memorial Award to the student/students with the best academic improvement. The award is donated by Dr. Mrinal Chandra Kalita, Associate Professor & HoD, Department of Mathematics, Pandu College.
Bidya Sagar Sharma Memorial Award to the most regular and punctual student/students. The award is donated by Dr. Karishma Shravan Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Pandu College.
